Little things that I noticed today

Gold leaf

It's easy to think of the colors of Winter as brown, grey, and just dreary. Which, yeah, they are mostly. But there are also some incredible reds and yellows.

Unlike most other trees, Beech trees hold onto their dead leaves all Winter. Probably because it keeps little animals from nibbling on their branches, or protecting buds from feezing. But why do their dead leaves turn a beautiful gold instead of a dry brown (while waiting for Spring, when the new buds finally start pushing out and make them drop)? For you and me to enjoy of course.
