Watch your step

How many years must have passed since these steps were made next to this tree, when the tree must have been small enough that whoever put the steps there didn't give a thought about the tree? Or were the steps there first, and the tree started growing there later?

When was the first time someone noticed that the tree had grown large enough that maybe it was starting to move those steps just a little bit? Was the road a dirt road then? Was the person on a horse, or riding in a carriage? And was there still anyone around then that knew who it was that put the steps there in the first place (or planted the tree).
